Should Recruiters Adopt Text-only Communication Practices

Should Recruiters Adopt Text-only Communication Practices Should Recruiters Adopt Text-only Communication Practices Voicemail 101? I had to look this up.And sure enough, my research came across The Etiquette School of New York, which objects to help foster the ideals of proper etiquette, good manners and civil behavior. The school offers, among many classes, intern training for newly-hired workers, recent college graduates or interns, and one of the areas under its Business Etiquette 101 course is techno-etiquettetelephone, cell phones, speaker phones, voice mail and fax machines.According to a New York Times story, Patricia Napier-Fitzpatrick, the founder of the Etiquette School of New York, estimates that 30 to 40 percent of herbei clients are millennials. The story quotes Napier-Fitzpatrick as saying that her clients voicemails lack polish.I coach them to be professional, she said. Not to say, Hey, this is Bob, call me, and then hang up. I tell them to say hello, state their full name and a full message, and I would appreciate a call back, thank you. The story also explains that, according to a 2012 Pew report on the phone habits of children ages 12 to 17, teenagers sent and received a median of 60 texts per day in 2011 versus 50 texts per day in 2009. The story noted that just 14 percent of the age group makes daily landline calls to friends compared with 30 percent in 2009.I dont know any millennials who own (or use) a landline and unless we have something important to say to a relative or close friend, most millennials I know skip voicemails as well.If text is the preferred form of communication among young people today, I wonder if this preference will ever affect the recruiting world. As more and more millennials opt in for texting and opt out of voice calls and messages, will recruiters have to adopt text as the new form of communication when sourcing younger talent? It reminds me of emails. I cannot tell you how many times in college a group I was a p art of had trouble with members not staying up to date because the students failed to check their emails. Massive group texts, Facebook messages and apps like GroupMe were more effective for communicating with students than traditional email.Even recently I was surprised when a new acquaintance emailed me about a networking event. She is my age and the majority of people I know my age and younger do not send emails anymore. In fact, about 90 percent of my email communications are business/work-related and have nothing to do with the social aspect of my life or people in my age group. Were seeing email die out among young workers, and landlines have been obsolete. Now with physically speaking to someone via phone taking a backburner to texts and emojis, will recruiters need to change their communication tactics in order to attract younger workers? The Etiquette School of New Yorks website says, Although the spirit of etiquette remains the same, the expression of etiquettethe rules of c onduct which govern social life and our associations with one anotheris forever evolving to adjust to the times. Is there a benefit in understanding how to leave a proper and professional voicemail? Is ones ability to effectively communicate his/her qualifications via phone an important part of the recruitment process, or should recruiters adjust to the times and adopt a text-only communication practice?

Guerrilla Marketing and Non-Traditional Advertising

Guerrilla Marketing and Non-Traditional Advertising Guerrilla Marketing and Non-Traditional Advertising In 1984, the year Apple broke the mold, Jay Conrad Levinson published a now legendary book called Guerrilla Marketing. It talked about unconventional ways of advertising, using smaller budgets and a larger imagination to capture the attention of consumers. Think outside of the box (in this case, the TV) and get away from the printed page. Be different. Stand out. Be unexpected. Over 25 years later, guerrilla marketing is now as commonplace as radio ads and outdoor. Here are some of the many ways you can advertise in non-traditional ways: Undercover marketing: subtle product placementExperiential marketing: interaction with a productTissue-pack marketing: hand-to-hand marketingReverse Graffiti: clean pavement advertisingViral marketing: through social networksBuzz marketing: word of mouth marketingGrassroots marketing: tapping into the collective efforts of brand enthusiastsWild Posting CampaignsWait marketing: when and where consumers are waiting However, with the popularity of this advertising method comes a consumer overloaded with advertising messages. In 1984, seeing an ad in a urinal or on the sidewalk was extraordinary. You could not help but take notice. Now, many consumers are so sick of the ad bombardment they face every day that these guerrilla tactics are more than a little annoying. To some, theyre insulting. But that doesnt mean guerrilla marketing has come to an end. Far from it. Jay Conrad Levinson was right; its a fantastic way to capture the attention, and imagination, of your target audience. You just have to do it right. And that means not only paying close attention to some of the important guidelines established in the Guerrilla Marketing book but knowing which of these guidelines no longer apply. The Core Principles of Good Guerrilla When it was published in 1984, Guerrilla Marketing was groundbreaking. Times change. Rules change. And some things stay the same. One of Levinsons big ideas was that good marketing doesnt have to cost anything. It can be most effective when its free, using news outlets to spread the message for you. That still applies today, and a savvy advertiser can take full advantage of the news to give the client real bang for the buck. This example, by Amelie Company, Denver, generated six-figure publicity with a 3D billboard simulating a crash. All the major local news channels picked it up. Other rules of guerrilla marketing that should still be followed include: It should be based on human psychology rather than experience, judgment, and guesswork.Instead of money, the primary investments of marketing should be time, energy, and imagination. The primary statistic to measure your business is the amount of profit, not sales. The marketer should also concentrate on how many new relationships are made each month.Create a standard of excellence with an acute focus instead of trying to diversify by offering too many diverse products and services.Instead of concentrating on getting new customers, aim for more referrals, more transactions with existing customers, and larger transactions. Forget about the competition and concentrate more on cooperating with other businesses.Guerrilla marketers should use a combination of marketing methods for a campaign.Use current technology as a tool to build your business.Messages are aimed at individuals or small groups, the smaller, the better.Focuses on gaining the consent of the individual to send them more information rather than trying to make the sale. But one of Levinsons ideas needs to be updated. This one: Guerrilla Marketing is specifically geared for the small business and entrepreneur. In its infancy, guerrilla marketing was specifically geared for the small business and entrepreneur. Levinson was right at the time. But now, many major corporations are taking advantage of guerrilla marketing, including Nike, Apple, Proctor Gamble, Nestle, ATT, and Sony. It is not exactly a pond full of small fish. But regardless of the time, the client, product, service or location, this quote by Levinson will always be of the utmost importance. Its not just for guerrilla marketing, but any communication between the company and consumer: In order to sell a product or a service, a company must establish a relationship with the customer. It must build trust and support. It must understand the customers needs, and it must provide a product that delivers the promised benefits.

How to Showcase Your Volunteer Work on Your Resume

How to Showcase Your Volunteer Work on Your Resume How to Showcase Your Volunteer Work on Your Resume Maybe you are reentering the workforce after a career break, or maybe you are looking to change careers. Either are good reasons to contemplate including volunteer work on your resume. The answer of whether or not you should all depends on the position youre applying for. Whether to put volunteer projects on your resume depends on how relevant the work was to your career or future career and as well as how deeply involved you were in the organization. A key thing to remember is to be scrupulously honest to avoid misleading hiring managers about unpaid work in your past.  If done right, having a volunteer resume section could help you stand out in a crowded field of job applicants. The Pros and Cons to Sharing Volunteer Work You may wonder whether to include volunteer work for your childrens preschool or the Parent Teacher Association. Are you worried that by including this would  tip off the hiring manager that youre a working mom and thats a strike against you? If you do list it and the company doesnt consider you, think about this: Would you really want to work for an organization that doesnt support working moms? You cant change the fact that you are a working mom, and its nothing you should have to hide. When you are called in for an interview its already on the table that youre a working mom. When your future employer knows this fact youll get a good idea during the interview process how their company culture views working parents. If you dont list your volunteer work you may be leaving out a piece of the puzzle that describes who you are as a person. Are you passionate about the volunteer work that youve done? If so, by letting your future employer know about it you may bet the opportunity to talk about something your passionate about besides your past positions. Also, if you do not include it, you are keeping your resume strictly professional. This may need to be the case depending on your field of work or the position youre applying for. If the position has 50% travel you may not be considered if they know youre heavily involved at the school. (But also you should consider if you would want a position that would take you away from what youre passionate about.) Examples of Volunteer Work You Should and Should Not Include When youre putting together your resume, volunteer work you might consider listing could include: Leadership roles, whether of an entire organization or an active committee.Any experience thats relevant to the job you want. For instance, if you are applying for a graphic designer position and you designed your daughters elementary school yearbook, that is probably worth including.Service to organizations that share the same mission as your prospective employer, i.e. the companies youre targeting in your job hunt. Dont think this means you need to add every single role youve held. The danger in putting anything on your resume, including volunteer work, is that an interviewer just might ask you about it. So you might consider keeping off your resume any volunteer positions such as: Work that involved little effort on your part, such as a one-time walk to raise money for cancer research.A supporting role, such as stuffing envelopes at a fundraising event. That involved controversial or sensitive organizations. Think about the subjects that are borderline in polite conversation: politics, sex, and religion. Where  to Showcase Volunteer Work  on Your Resume How youll present volunteer work depends on the type of resume you have. If you have a chronological resume, you can include volunteer work in a section titled Related Experience. If you have a functional resume, which is common among stay-at-home moms returning to work after a career break, you can include meaningful volunteer work alongside other positions, whether paid or unpaid. List the position you held and include a description of skills used and outcomes that are specific and as quantitative as possible. For instance, if you organized a fundraising dinner for your local childrens hospital, be sure to include that the event included a guest list of 600 people, raised $50,000 for cancer research and had overhead costs of only 15 percent. Mention any transferable  skills, including sales (when you solicit people for donations), management (when you keep tabs on three dozen unruly volunteers) and event coordination (all the day-of-dinner details and last-minute crises). How to Showcase Volunteer Work on LinkedIn Are youre already using LinkedIn to network and job hunt? If so, did you know that LinkedIn offers a special section for volunteer work? Its titled Volunteer. To add this to your LinkedIn profile, first log in. Next, click Improve your Profile at the top, scroll down to the Volunteer section and click on Add Volunteer Experience. Follow the same rules that you would for volunteer work on a traditional resume. You can  include deep, meaningful experiences that you would want to discuss in a job  interview in hopes of making  a good impression on the interviewer.

What To Do So You Dont Hear Youre Overqualified

What To Do So You Dont Hear Youre Overqualified What To Do So You Dont Hear Youre Overqualified INBOX: “I’ve been searching for 5 months now, and I have to say this is not coming together for me this time as easily as it did for my last job. The problem is I’m getting the “overqualified” response even though I’m not that concerned with the level or title. I don’t know how to change this.” When you approach your job search with a flexible, open mind, it can be vexing to keep on smacking up against responses that feel inflexible. After all, you match the qualifications in the ad, you’re willing to do the role, and the title doesn’t matter that much to you…so, what’s the problem? The problem is that you â€" quite naturally â€" are only thinking about this from your perspective. I gently suggest that you adopt the recruiter’s or employer’s perspective, and then make some adjustments so that you fit the role in their mind. Segment Your Job Search â€" Strategically A good rule of thumb is to pursue roles that are on your level, 1 title below your level, and 1 title above your level. But where most jobseekers make a mistake is in using the same resume for all 3 of those levels. What you need to do instead is approach each role strategically. You can â€" and should make modifications to your resume that take just a few minutes. This is far different from a resume overhaul (which you should NOT be doing every time.) Identify the primary 5 responsibilities indicated in the ad that the employer would be paying you to come in and actually DO. These are going to be the central duties in the job, then make sure each version of your resume reflects those. DO Be Concerned About Title While you may be open to a range of opportunities, the employer â€" in most cases â€" only has 1 opportunity to fill at the moment. It’s in your best interest to fit the mold so you can increase the likelihood of the employer responding to you and calling you for an interview. For example, if the position is Senior Manager and you’ve been at the Director or VP level for several years, dial back the leadership tone that comes across on your resume, to align yourself more closely with a candidate who looks like a Senior Manager. The criticism I often hear about this approach is that it feels like dumbing down your resume. It’s not. Realigning you resume to fit the role at hand is the smartest thing you can possibly do to move your job search in the direction that you want. Don’t Mix Up The Message When your phone rings and the recruiter wants to speak to you about your background, make sure to articulate the story in that conversation that matches the story on your resume. The mistake is the tendency to want to add more or to tell the full story. You have the full story in your mind, but the recruiter only has the story that’s on the piece of paper. Your resume is the reason the person called you in the 1st place. At this stage, they’re primarily seeking confirmation of the story your resume tells. Now is not your opportunity to “fill in” everything you may have left off. Focus on presenting the story that best showcases you as the ideal candidate for the role. Just as you can be selective in what the resume shows, you can also be selective in your conversation. You do this in any number of social interactions on a daily basis already: the answer to, “how have you been doing?” is different based on who’s asking: your doctor, the best friend you just saw 2 days ago, or your old high school friend from 20 years back. Your responses in an interview situation need to differ as well. If you’re targeting a Senior Manager role, the story in which you strategically guided an enterprise-wide initiative to promote financial transparency when you were VP, Finance, may not be the best example that serves you in this particular case. Instead, select an example that more tightly aligns with the level of responsibility indicated in the ad for the Senior Manager role. Take ownership of the accomplishments that feel closest to what you'd be required to do in the opportunity you're pursuing at this moment. Much of getting hired centers on making a connection. That connection starts with your resume, and carries through so you get responses, get calls for interviews, and hear offers.
